Technical SEO and AI Search Essentials with Semrush
Semrush Academy · Tool vendor
Our verdict
A competent free technical SEO primer with an AI veneer. The fundamentals are taught well and are transferable, and the site structure segment alone justifies the time. But the title oversells the AI component, which amounts to roughly fifteen minutes of a seventy-five minute course. If you want AI-specific technical guidance on GPTBot, llms.txt and crawler control, the Ahrefs AEO course covers it more directly. Take this one for the fundamentals.

Open course website →What this course actually is
A free 22-lesson course of about one hour fifteen minutes that teaches technical SEO fundamentals and adds an AI search layer at the end. The bulk of the curriculum is conventional and tool-agnostic material: site architecture, XML sitemaps, indexing, robots meta tags, structured data markup, Core Web Vitals, and HTTPS. A standout is a 17-minute expert segment on site structure, the longest single lesson in any Semrush AI course we reviewed. Three lessons near the end address AI specifically, covering technical SEO for AI systems, identifying LLM optimization opportunities, and an expert segment on technical AI SEO. Rita Cidre and Rosa Amato present. The course is free and requires only a free Semrush account, and a certificate follows an exam. Buyers should note the AI content here is a modest addition to a traditional technical SEO course rather than the focus, despite the course title giving AI equal billing.

Strengths and weaknesses
What it does well
- Most of the curriculum is genuinely tool-agnostic technical SEO that transfers anywhere
- Per-lesson runtimes are published so learners can plan and skip
- Free with no paid subscription required
- The 17-minute site structure expert segment is substantial for a free course
- Certificate included at no cost
Where it falls short
- Only three of 22 lessons are actually about AI, despite the title
- Coverage of robots.txt directives for AI crawlers and llms.txt appears thin compared with Ahrefs
- Four walkthroughs require Semrush Site Audit to follow along
- Includes a conference advertisement lesson
- No content last-updated date published
How it scores, and why
Depth is adequate for fundamentals but shallow on AI. Currency is only moderate because the AI portion is a small bolt-on to an otherwise evergreen syllabus. Instructor authority is mid since one presenter is a customer success manager rather than a technical practitioner. Practical application scores slightly higher than its sibling course because sitemap submission, schema and Core Web Vitals work can be done with free Google tools. Value for money is high as it is free. Support is minimal.
Who teaches it
Rita Cidre and Rosa Amato. Rita Cidre is Head of Academy at Semrush with around 15 years of marketing experience. Rosa Amato is a Scale Customer Success Manager at Semrush.
Both listed as instructors on the course page. Amato's role is customer success rather than technical SEO practice, which is worth weighing. The longest lesson is an outside expert segment on site structure.
